Stomach Flu Diagnosis (Cont.)

Stomach Flu Diagnosis and Other Medical Conditions

Stomach flu infections (especially rotavirus) can be seen as part of other conditions, including:

  • Kawasaki syndrome (a condition usually seen children under 5 that affects the skin, lymph nodes, mouth, and throat)
  • Reye's syndrome (a condition that can cause serious damage to the brain and liver)
  • Encephalitis
  • Aseptic meningitis
  • Intussusception
  • Hemolytic uremic syndrome (a condition that can cause short-term kidney failure)
  • Crohn's disease.

During the medical history and physical exam, the doctor will make sure that these conditions are not present in a person with stomach flu.
