Info on Cholera

Cholera is a bacterial infection that can cause severe diarrhea and vomiting; however, it is also possible to be infected and have very mild symptoms -- or even no symptoms at all. Once the disease is diagnosed, prompt treatment is essential, and often includes fluid replacement to counter dehydration and antibiotics to kill the bacteria causing the disease.

Cholera rarely occurs in the United States and other industrialized nations, but it is still common in parts of Latin America, Africa, and Asia. As a result, people traveling to those areas need to be aware of the possibility and take steps to prevent contracting the disease. There is no cholera vaccine at present, so the best way to prevent infection is to avoid possibly contaminated food and water.
