An Overview of the Cholera Vaccine
At the present time, the manufacture and sale of the only licensed
cholera vaccine in the United States have been discontinued. The vaccine has not been recommended for travelers because of the brief and incomplete immunity if offers. Furthermore, no cholera vaccine requirements exist for entry to or exit from any country.
Cholera Vaccine Outside of the United States
Two recently developed cholera vaccines are licensed and available in some other countries. These cholera vaccines include Dukoral™, manufactured by Biotec AB, and Mutacol®, manufactured by Berna. Both cholera vaccines appear to provide somewhat better immunity, and fewer side effects, than the previously available cholera vaccine; however, neither of these two vaccines is recommended for travelers, nor are they available in the United States.
